Overview

Bacolod is the capital of Negros Occidental, a sugar-growing province whose plantations left behind grand ancestral houses and a food culture built around grilled chicken inasal, sweet pastries, and sugarcane. The city calls itself the City of Smiles, and its MassKara Festival fills the streets with masked dancers. It is a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding haciendas and the skeletal remains of an early twentieth-century mansion in neighboring Talisay.

Standout experiences

  • Chicken inasal and Manokan Country

The city's signature grilled chicken, marinated with calamansi, lemongrass, and annatto and eaten with rice and dipping sauce at rows of open-air grills.

  • The Ruins in Talisay

The concrete shell of a grand sugar mansion outside the city, its columns and arched windows a popular evening stop.

  • Silay heritage houses

A short drive north, a cluster of sugar-era ancestral homes and museums kept by the families that built them.

  • MassKara Festival

The city's annual street festival, when masked dancers, music, and food stalls take over the main streets.

  • Kanlaon foothills and Mambukal

Hot springs, a small waterfall, and forest trails on the slopes of Mount Kanlaon to the south.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Bacolod-Silay Airport (BCD), about 15 kilometers northeast of Bacolod in Barangay Bagtic, Silay. Cebu Pacific, PAL Express, and Philippines AirAsia serve it from Manila, Cebu, and Davao. Shuttle vans and taxis connect the terminal to Bacolod, and a new access road links the airport to Barangay Bata; tricycles cover nearby Silay.

When to go

The dry season from December to May suits city sightseeing and trips to Silay and the northern Negros coast. The MassKara Festival runs October 1 to 18 in 2026, with major street-dance events from October 9 to 18 and closing ceremonies on October 25. Organizers moved the highlights earlier to avoid the severe late-October weather.
