Overview

Dinagat Islands lie off the northern tip of Surigao, a province of scattered islands and limestone coasts that sees little of the traffic of nearby Siargao. From the base at San Jose, boats reach calm coves and coral gardens, and the unusual Lake Bababu, a brackish lake set inland where fresh and salt water stay unmixed in layers. Beaches such as Bitaog and the snorkeling islets around Pangabangan fill out a slow, boat-based visit, with a regulated whale-shark area offshore.

Standout experiences

  • Lake Bababu

A meromictic lake reached by boat and a short jungle walk, calm on the surface with layered water below.

  • Bitaog Beach

Fine white sand and clear water on a quiet beach near San Jose, good for swimming and picnics.

  • Pangabangan Island

A small island with sandbars, lagoons, and near-shore coral, plus a short climb to a viewpoint.

  • San Jose island-hopping

A chartered boat loop through nearby beaches and coves, with an optional regulated whale-shark encounter.

Getting there

Dinagat Islands has no commercial airport. Travelers reach it by ferry from Surigao City port to San Jose, Cagdianao, or Libjo, a crossing of about 1.5 to 2 hours. Surigao Airport and Butuan's Bancasi Airport (BXU) are the nearest gateways, with buses and vans to Surigao City. A Nier Shipping ferry also links Del Carmen port on Siargao to Cagdianao.

When to go

The Dinagat Islands are among the Philippines' most climate-vulnerable provinces, exposed to Pacific typhoons. The drier months from March to May give the calmest seas for the Surigao crossing and island hopping. Ferry trips can be suspended without notice during rough weather or Coast Guard advisories, so the crossing is weather-dependent.
