Overview

Iligan sits on the coast of Northern Mindanao and is known as the city of waterfalls, with a concentration of cascades in and around town. The best known is Maria Cristina, a tall fall on the Agusan River's outflow, while Tinago drops hidden in a gorge and the easier Mimbalot tiers sit close by. Between waterfall trips, the cold-spring pools at Timoga and the sunset waterfront at Paseo de Santiago round out an unhurried city stay.

Standout experiences

  • Maria Cristina Falls

A tall cascade on the Agus River, the city's signature, viewed from a park beside the falls.

  • Tinago Falls

A hidden fall in a deep gorge with a blue pool, reached by a long stairway descent.

  • Mimbalot Falls

A multi-tiered roadside cascade, the easiest of the city's waterfalls to reach.

  • Timoga Spring Pools

Cold spring-fed swimming pools, a family favorite between waterfall trips.

  • Paseo de Santiago

A seaside park for sunsets and food stalls along the waterfront.

Getting there

Laguindingan Airport (CGY) is the main gateway, about 57 km from Iligan. Buses and vans run from the airport and from Cagayan de Oro to Iligan in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The Port of Iligan, on Iligan Bay, has passenger and cargo shipping lines to Cebu and Ozamiz. Maria Cristina Airport in Balo-i now handles only general aviation.

When to go

Iligan lies outside the typhoon belt and is sheltered by mountains that weaken storms. Rain is fairly evenly spread, but September (about 578 mm) and October (about 780 mm) are the wettest months, and February to April the driest. Those drier months suit visits to Tinago Falls, Maria Cristina Falls, and the city's cold springs.
