Santa Ana (Cagayan)
The launch point for Palaui Island, a rugged northeast coast of empty coves, reefs, and a historic lighthouse.

Overview
Santa Ana sits at the far northeastern tip of Luzon, the jump-off for Palaui Island and its protected landscape of white-sand coves, snorkeling reefs, and the old Cape Engaño lighthouse on a headland above the Babuyan Channel. The trip is deliberate and weather-dependent: boats cross from San Vicente Port, and the island itself has almost no services, so travelers bring their own supplies and treat the crossing as part of the adventure. Callao Cave near Peñablanca is a common addition on the way through Tuguegarao.
Standout experiences

A strenuous trail to the historic lighthouse on Palaui's headland, with wide views over the channel and nearby islets.
Anguib Beach
A creamy white-sand beach with agoho trees and calm water on the island's sheltered side.
Siwangag Cove and Punta Verde
Snorkeling and jump-off points for the lighthouse trail, often combined in one boat tour.
Palaui camping
Basic camping under permit for travelers who want the island at night.
Callao Cave
A large limestone cave with a skylit chamber near Peñablanca, paired with the Tuguegarao transit.
Getting there
Santa Ana sits at the northeastern tip of Cagayan. Travelers fly into Tuguegarao Airport (TUG), served by Cebu Pacific and PAL Express from Manila, then take a bus or van north to Santa Ana. Boats to Palaui Island and Cape Engaño leave from the San Vicente port in Santa Ana, about a 45-minute crossing. Buses also run from Manila to Santa Ana.
When to go
Santa Ana and Palaui lie in the typhoon belt at the country's northeastern edge, so the wet months from around July to October bring storms and suspended sea crossings to the island. The drier, calmer window runs roughly December to May, which is best for the boat trip to Palaui, Anguib Beach, and the Cape Engaño lighthouse.
