Visayas · Negros Island Region
Dumaguete
A relaxed university city and dive gateway on Negros, a short boat ride from Apo Island and Siquijor.

Overview
Dumaguete is a small, walkable city on the southeast coast of Negros, known for its seafront boulevard, cafe culture, and university. Most travelers use it as a base for the diving and snorkeling around Apo Island, and for trips inland to the crater lakes and waterfalls of Valencia. Ferry links to Siquijor and the surrounding islands make it a convenient, unhurried hub for the southern Visayas.
Standout experiences
Apo Island
A protected marine sanctuary island offshore, reached by boat, with coral gardens, fish, and sea turtles.
Boulevard and city center
A seafront promenade of cafes and restaurants that makes an evening in the city easy on foot.
Valencia and the twin lakes
Mountain lakes and forest walks inland, notably cooler and greener than the coast.
Casaroro Falls
A deep-gorge waterfall reached by a long stepped trail, for travelers comfortable on foot.
Siquijor side trips
A short ferry ride away, the neighboring island of Siquijor, often combined with a stay here.
Getting there
Sibulan Airport (DGT), also called Dumaguete Airport, is about three kilometers north of the city in Sibulan. Cebgo flies to Cebu; Cebu Pacific and PAL Express fly to Manila. From Dumaguete City Port, fast ferries cross to Siquijor in 40 to 60 minutes, with about 18 to 20 OceanJet trips daily and Anika Star as a cheaper option.
When to go
The dry season runs December to May, with April and May the hottest months; the wet season is June to November, and rain peaks in October and November. Sandurot Festival fills September, and the Buglasan Festival of Festivals runs October 15 to 25 in 2026, with street dancing, booths, and a showdown in Dumaguete. Diving at nearby Apo Island is best in the calm dry months.
