Ilagan (Isabela)
The capital of Isabela, a base for rainforest parks, historic churches, and Cagayan Valley river country.

Overview
Ilagan is the capital of Isabela and sits at the center of the Cagayan Valley's cultural corridor. The city is the usual base for the Ilagan Sanctuary, an eco-park of forest trails and river scenery, and for the nearby wartime tunnel and Tumauini's red-brick church with its unusual cylindrical bell tower. The province is also the gateway to the Northern Sierra Madre, the country's largest protected area, and its January Bambanti Festival fills the city with giant scarecrow figures.

Getting there
Ilagan has no airport. The nearest is Cauayan Airport (CYZ) in neighboring Isabela, served by Cebu Pacific and PAL Express from Manila, with buses and vans covering the short transfer to Ilagan. Long-distance buses also run from Metro Manila to Isabela in about ten hours, and the province's road network connects Ilagan to Tuguegarao and the rest of Cagayan Valley.
When to go
Isabela is hot and dry from March to May and wet from June to November. The province's biggest event is the Bambanti Festival, held in the fourth week of January at the provincial capitol, with giant scarecrow displays, street dancing, and culinary showcases. The dry months also suit the Ilagan Sanctuary and the Abuan River.
