La Union (San Juan)
Northern Luzon's surf coast, where San Juan breaks, beach cafes, and Ilocano food meet.

Overview
La Union, known locally as Elyu, is the surfing capital of northern Luzon. The town of San Juan and its Urbiztondo beach draw beginners and experienced surfers alike, with a strip of surf schools, cafes, and beachfront places that stays busy from Friday to Sunday. Behind the coast, the province offers waterfalls, a hilltop Taoist temple in San Fernando, and the farms and markets of the lowlands, making it an easy escape from Manila.

Getting there
La Union has no commercial airport; the airfield at San Fernando has no passenger service. Buses run to San Fernando from Manila, Baguio, Dagupan, Vigan, and Laoag, and San Juan's surf beaches are a short jeepney or tricycle ride further along the coast. By car, the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway cuts the drive from Manila to about four to five hours.
When to go
San Juan's waves work year-round, but December and January are often the best months. The southwest monsoon from June to October brings heavy rain, flooding, and landslides in the interior towns, and Kennon Road from Baguio can close as a precaution. The dry months from November to May draw the biggest crowds to the beach.
