Overview

San Pablo is built around a cluster of volcanic crater lakes, which is why it is known as the city of seven lakes. The largest, Sampaloc, is walkable from the center and ringed by parkland and lakeside eateries, while smaller lakes such as Pandin and Yambo are reached by short rides and explored by bamboo raft. It makes an easy weekend from Manila, and its position puts Pagsanjan's river gorge, the hot springs below Mount Makiling, and older Laguna towns within day-trip range.

Standout experiences

  • Crater lake rafts

Bamboo-raft meals on small emerald lakes, the classic San Pablo experience.

  • Sampaloc Lake

The largest and most accessible lake, with a park path and lakeside food spots.

  • Lake-country food

Local bakeries and lakeside grills known for freshwater fish and sweet pastries.

  • Pagsanjan and Cavinti

A river-boat trip through a gorge to the falls, a short drive away.

  • Makiling springs and towns

Hot springs and gardens at Los Baños, plus the old lakeside towns of Laguna.

Getting there

Buses running between Manila and Lucena stop at San Pablo, with designated stops at the Central Terminal, SM City San Pablo, San Rafael, and Franklin Baker along the Maharlika Highway. By car, the fastest route leaves the STAR Tollway at Santo Tomas and follows the Maharlika Highway. The city is about 82 km from Manila. A railway station exists, but long-distance trains have been suspended.

When to go

San Pablo sits higher than the rest of Laguna and has a cooler climate shaped by its seven crater lakes and the surrounding volcanic hills. It is known for its Coconut Festival, which now aligns with Charter Day on May 7. Low parts of town can flood during the rainy season, and not all seven lakes are suitable for swimming.
