Overview

Sogod Bay opens along the southern coast of Leyte, where a handful of low-key dive resorts work reefs and walls that see far fewer divers than the better-known Visayas sites. The draw is the water: coral shelves and drop-offs around Padre Burgos and the neighboring island of Limasawa, and a seasonal run of whale sharks searched for by local spotters under strict no-touch rules. Above the bay, Limasawa holds the site of the 1521 First Mass, and the tall Agas-Agas bridge and zipline make an easy inland stop.

Standout experiences

  • Reef and wall diving

Coral shelves, pinnacles, and steep walls across a spread of uncrowded sites.

  • Whale-shark season

Whole-day spotter-boat searches in season, run with strict no-touch, no-feed rules.

  • Limasawa Island

A heritage island with the 1521 First Mass site, beaches, and viewpoints.

  • Agas-Agas Bridge

One of the country's tallest bridges, with a zipline over the valley below.

Getting there

Fly to Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (TAC) in Tacloban and arrange a road transfer to Padre Burgos, about three hours away. A common alternative is a flight into Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), then the OceanJet ferry from Cebu Pier 1 to Maasin and a 45-minute drive. Ferries from Ubay, Bohol also reach Bato and Hilongos in Leyte, about 90 minutes from the resorts.

When to go

Plan around the whale sharks, which usually appear from November through the end of May, though sightings are never guaranteed. Local ordinance limits encounters to snorkeling and caps time with the animals at three hours. Reef and wall diving runs year-round. Ferry schedules change seasonally, so the operator recommends confirming transfers before travel; the wet months from June to November can make crossings rougher.
