Overview

Ticao lies between Masbate and the Bicol mainland, and its reputation rests on the Manta Bowl, a submerged shoal where currents draw manta rays, whale sharks, and other large animals to a cleaning station. The island's dive resorts run trips to the shoal and to nearby reefs, and Catandayagan Falls drops from a green sea cliff straight into the water on the coast. The crossing to Donsol puts whale sharks within reach on the other side of the pass, and Masbate City's rodeo adds a distinctly local stop on the way through.

  • Burias sandbars

Sombrero and Tinalisayan islands and their long sandbars on a group boat day.

Getting there

Ticao Island has no airport. Travelers fly to Masbate (MBT, Moises R. Espinosa Airport) or Legazpi (DRP, Bicol International Airport), then continue by road and sea. From Bulan port in Sorsogon, boats reach San Jacinto in about one to one and a half hours. From Masbate City, ferries run to Lagundi with onward road travel; Pilar also has crossings to San Jacinto and Monreal.

When to go

The Manta Bowl, the seamount in Ticao Pass, hosts manta rays year-round. Whale sharks visit from November to June, and thresher sharks and other pelagics from July to October. Bicol lies in the typhoon belt, so crossings and dive boats are most reliable in the drier months from roughly December to May, when the pass is calmer in the morning.
