Overview

Butuan sits on the Agusan River in Caraga, and its identity rests on the balangay, the plank-built boats excavated here that push the city's trading history back long before Spanish contact. Museums in town hold the boats, goldwork, and archaeological finds, while the river still shapes the place and runs inland toward the vast Agusan Marsh. It is a calm, low-key city that works as a base for the marsh and as a gateway to the Caraga coast.

Getting there

Bancasi Airport (BXU), also called Butuan Airport, has daily flights from Manila and Cebu on Cebu Pacific, PAL Express, and Cebgo. The airport is a short ride from central Butuan. Long-distance buses and vans link Butuan to Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Surigao, and Bislig. 2GO ferries connect Manila, Cebu, and Ozamiz to the Port of Nasipit in Agusan del Norte.

When to go

Butuan has a tropical rainforest climate with no true dry season; January is the wettest month (about 326 mm) and April the driest (about 117 mm). The Balangay Festival runs through May, with its main day on May 19 and fluvial parades on the Agusan River. February to May brings the driest weather for river cruises and city sightseeing.
