Overview

Calaguas is a small island group off the Camarines Norte coast, and its draw is Mahabang Buhangin on Tinaga Island: a long curve of fine white sand with no resort strip behind it. Reaching it takes a bus up the Bicol coast and a boat crossing from the mainland, and once there the day is swimming, walking the beach, and camping under open sky. Facilities are minimal, so travelers bring supplies and settle into a slower, self-sufficient trip, with neighboring islets and coves to explore when the sea is calm.

Standout experiences

  • Mahabang Buhangin beach

A long stretch of pale sand and clear shallows, the group's signature and a place to swim, walk, and camp.

  • Island camping

Tent nights on the beach with bonfires and dark skies, the usual way to stay because there is no resort town.

  • Islet and cove hops

Pump-boat trips to the shores of Tinaga and Maculabo for viewpoints and quieter coves.

  • Bagasbas side trip

The beginner-friendly surf beach on the Daet mainland, an easy add-on on the way in or out.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Naga Airport (WNP) in Camarines Sur. From Naga, vans run to Daet in two to three hours; buses from Manila reach Daet in about nine hours. Travelers then continue to the jump-off ports of Paracale or Vinzons, and a boat crosses to Tinaga Island's Mahabang Buhangin beach in two to three hours.

When to go

January to August are the usual months to visit Calaguas. January to early March is cooler, while March to early June brings calmer water but hotter weather. Because the final leg is a long open-sea boat ride, trips depend on the weather and can be called off when conditions are rough. Camping is the usual lodging, and electricity is limited.
