Donsol
A quiet Sorsogon fishing town known for ethical whale-shark encounters and mangrove firefly evenings.

Overview
Donsol sits on the coast of Sorsogon, where the waters of the Ticao Pass draw whale sharks in numbers that made the town a landmark for wildlife tourism. Encounters are organized and regulated around respect for the animals, with licensed boats, trained spotters, and strict rules against feeding or touching. When the sharks are not around, the town offers firefly cruises through mangroves, quiet beaches, and inland lakes and churches, so a visit need not depend on a single sighting.
Standout experiences
Whale-shark encounters
Regulated boat trips with spotters and guides, entering the water only on instruction to watch the animals at a respectful distance.
Firefly river cruise
An evening drift along a mangrove-lined river lit by thousands of fireflies.
Paguriran Island and Lagoon
A limestone-ringed lagoon with calm water for swimming, a favorite of local families.
Bulusan and Barcelona side trips
A crater lake, hidden waterfalls, and the coral-stone Barcelona church for travelers with an extra day.
Getting there
Most travelers fly to Legazpi's Bicol International Airport (DRP) in Daraga, then take a public minivan to Donsol; the trip costs about 98 pesos and drops passengers at the Donsol bus station. Buses also run from Manila direct to Donsol or via Legazpi. From the town center, tricycles reach the beach area of Dancalan and the whale shark visitor center.
When to go
Whale sharks gather in Donsol's waters for six to nine months a year, from November to June, with numbers peaking from February to early May. Resorts are generally open only during that whale shark season, roughly December to May. Sightings have declined sharply since the 2010s, so a boat trip offers no guarantee.
