Sablayan (Occidental Mindoro)
The mainland base for Apo Reef, a remote atoll of coral, big marine life, and a lighthouse island.

Overview
Sablayan, on the west coast of Occidental Mindoro, is the mainland gateway to Apo Reef Natural Park, a large atoll reef far offshore whose lagoon, coral walls, and lighthouse island draw divers and snorkelers. The reef is reached on a long open-water crossing, so trips are arranged in advance and depend on calm seas. Closer in, a small island resort and the town's own coast offer easier diving, while inland waterfalls, a forest lake, and Mangyan communities round out the stay.
Standout experiences
Apo Reef
A vast atoll of coral gardens and walls around a lagoon and lighthouse island, reached on a guided boat expedition.
Pandan Island diving
House reefs, turtles, and calm water close to the mainland, a gentler alternative to the open reef.
Mainland eco loop
Waterfalls, a forest lake, and viewpoints into the highlands beyond the town.
Rare wildlife country
Uplands that form part of the range of the tamaraw, one of the country's most endangered animals.
Getting there
The nearest airport is San Jose Airport (SJI) on Mindoro, then a two-hour bus or van ride to Sablayan. Cebu Pacific serves San Jose, including flights from Clark. Alternatively, buses from PITX run to San Jose with a roll-on/roll-off crossing from Batangas to Abra de Ilog. Boats continue from the mainland to Pandan Island and Apo Reef.
When to go
The local diving season runs from October through May, with peak months from December to March. Operators avoid the rainy season from June to September for safety and comfort, when seas can turn rough. Water is slightly cooler from January to April, which often brings more large pelagic animals to Apo Reef. Trips need a minimum number of divers and are not daily.
