Batanes
The country's northernmost province, a green archipelago of stone villages, cliffs, and sweeping coastal views.

Overview
Batanes lies at the northern edge of the Philippines, a small archipelago of windswept islands where rolling green hills drop to steep Pacific cliffs. The Ivatan built low stone houses and roofed them against the typhoons, and the landscape of hedgerows, fishing villages, and lighthouses has a spare and distinctive beauty. Batan and Sabtang are the usual bases, with rides between viewpoints, villages, and coves shaped by the weather and the tide.
Standout experiences
Ivatan stone villages
Traditional limestone houses in towns such as Chavayan on Sabtang, built low and thick against the storms.
Coastal viewpoints
Green hills and cliffs above the Pacific, from the Basco lighthouse to the Marinawa cliffs.
Sabtang Island
A short boat ride to stone villages, old churches, and quiet coves on the province's calmer island.
Boulder and sand beaches
Volcanic boulder beaches and pale sand coves shaped by the open sea.
Ivatan food and slow days
Local cooking, root crops, and fishing-village routines that reward travelers who stay a few days.
Getting there
Basco Airport (BSO) on Batan Island receives small aircraft. PAL Express connects Basco to Clark, and Sky Pasada flies from Tuguegarao and Laoag. Flights are limited and easily cancelled in bad weather. Within the province, round-bottomed falowa boats cross from Ivana port to Sabtang in about 30 minutes, and a ferry runs from Basco to Itbayat, roughly three hours.
When to go
Batanes is the province most exposed to typhoons. The dry season runs February to early June, when the skies clear and flights are most reliable; the wet season from July to October brings storms and frequent flight cancellations. November to February is cool and windy under the northeast monsoon, and the Vunung Festival is held in June.
