Overview

Buscalan is a small village in Tinglayan, Kalinga, reached by a mountain road and a final climb into rice-terrace country. It is best known as the home of the Butbut mambabatok and the hand-tapped batok tradition, which draws travelers seeking a tattoo from a living lineage. Beyond the ink, the village offers homestay nights, terraced trails, and a look at a culture that held out against Spanish rule, set against steep Kalinga valleys.

Standout experiences

  • Batok tattoo session

A traditional hand-tapped tattoo from the Butbut lineage, with designs sized from small motifs to larger pieces.

  • Village homestay nights

Simple family-run stays with shared meals of mountain rice, smoked pork, and brewed Kalinga coffee.

  • Terraces and hanging bridge

Short walks around the village terraces and the footbridge over the gorge.

  • Tinglayan and Tabuk

The Chico River country and Kalinga's capital on the way in or out, with markets and small museums.

Getting there

Buscalan lies in Tinglayan, Kalinga, far from any airport. Most travelers take a Manila to Tabuk bus, then a jeepney to Tinglayan and on to Barangay Bugnay, the gateway; from Bugnay it is a habal-habal ride and a hike, or a longer walk, into the village. Bontoc is another access point, and Banaue is about two and a half hours away by 4x4 in the dry season.

When to go

The dry months from roughly December to May give the firmest roads and trails into Buscalan; the June-to-November rainy season raises the risk of landslides and road closures on the Cordillera highways. Kalinga's Bodong Festival and the Lumin-awa Trek both fall in February in Tabuk, drawing visitors for the province's founding anniversary celebrations.
